Is there ever a challenge in life you shouldnt take? Is there ever a time when a challenge arises in your life and you dont go for it and in the aftermath of it all, you dont think, DAMN, I should have gone for it, I totally could have done it.
Im at a spot in my life where I am at that fork in the road. Go for it... risk a ton... or dont and wait to see if something better comes along. There is the one side that says HIGH RISK, HIGH REWARD!!! The other says, I have taken a ton of risks in my life, and it might be a good idea to wait for the perfect opportunity. However, the "Perfect" opportunity will never come along. Nothing will ever be perfect. But with a brand new baby, high risk is extra risky.
I am literally pissing myself off, trying to figure this out. I need some help. Anyone got any great advice. I will try to spell it out in the following three scenarios and you help me decide on a scenario without calling out anything specific.
1. Next step promotion in a currently struggling environment. Lots to fix here. Good pay increase, part of my current 5 year plan. Would require a move of my family, not a far move, but another move none the less. High Risk
2. Take a completely new opportunity. Same base pay with a commission structure. Excellent hours, Monday through Friday, morning to early evening. Completely different from my 5 year plan. Would require me to reevaluate my plan. No move required. High Risk
3. Stay put, and wait for something else. High Risk... My current performance is very good, striking now on an opportunity to promote would be smart. Waiting could lead to nothing better or lower performance and my candidacy may not look as good...
HELP!!!

Take #1.
ReplyDeleteKick it's bootie.
You are a great leader and have the attitude and personality to make yourself successful, no matter path you decide on. Everyone has a different belief on where peace comes from, but I have learned to never take a step that I do not have peace for. This can also mean not taking a step if I don't have peace to leave my current place in life. I also am a firm believer in "step and confirm" - take one small step at a time and as you do it will be clear whether or not you should continue. God provides my confirmation, but regardless of your beliefs I feel strongly that the principles will hold no matter what. -Sarah Edwards
ReplyDeleteThanks... both of you... Sarah good to hear from you... I appreciate the words. Justin I appreciate your words as well...
ReplyDeleteJB you are a phenomenal leader! You have an amazing talent of motivating and inspiring your employees. Personally, I have learned a lot from you, and so have many others. James definitely looks to you as a role model.
ReplyDeleteIf option number one is a GM spot, you will definitely succeed, even if it is a struggling environment. You can fix whatever is going on in that store, and come out on top. With your capabilities and potential you will succeed in whichever endeavor you choose.
Even though you have been gone for a while now, I sometimes think man, I wish JB still worked here. Although, you did help us out a lot by throwing Jason in. :)
I wish you the best of luck!

I can see how any of these are difficult to make a decision on, especially with the new baby in the picture. Without knowing the specifics, it is hard to base a firm judgment on what exactly to choose. I think the first option sounds good, considering it is in your 5 year plan, and it sounds like it is still in the field you currently dominate.
ReplyDeleteAs a man looking to have a family life in my future as well, the second option sounds really nice because of having the weekend off, but a commission structure sounds more risky even though you are the type of person that can do anything! Knowing how driven you are, I think either option would work out for you and your family. No matter what, just remember that the man upstairs will always help lead you to where you need to go. - Corey P
we have been in this place a few times. You have to do what your heart tells you. Sometimes, we have taken the risk and sometimes we have decided to do what is best for everyone in the family. There is no easy choice. Do what makes you the happiest!
ReplyDeleteYou should just do this, http://ferrariguyforhire.com/index.html, in KC. That would be pretty high risk, but look how cool that guy is.
ReplyDeleteHow many opportunities are going to come up that fit #1 where there isn't a currently struggling environment? The majority of times that opens up is because of some sort of underperformance.
Either of the top two options aren't as high risk as you think. I don't think you would allow yourself to fail at either, it is really about where you see yourself in the next few years. I think #1 is your best opportunity as it aligns with your goals, but you'll kick whichever ass you decide to.
Like others have said, I think you need to look at your long term goals. Where do you want to be in the future, and which option allows you to move up (if that is what you want).
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome at your job and what you do- you moved up REALLY fast, and you can make #1 shine. It's a challenge, but it seems like you do well when challenged, and not bored out of your mind.
Option 2 is very different than option 1. It just depends what direction you want to go in.
I would encourage you to at least try for either 1 or 2 and not stick with 3.
Besides, with option 1, you'll be able to have better hours than with option 3 anyway.
Good luck, and whatever choice you make will be great with your family, and we all support your decision!
WOW!!! THANK YOU ALL... Corey P, Tara, Minard, Abby, and Lisa, I appreciate it all.. THANKS.. Ill keep you all posted on my future.
